Education & Training

Scout Training – Learning Opportunities Available!

Several training opportunities are on the upcoming District calendar. Everyone is eligible to take these courses to learn more about scouting.

OWL and BALOO Training are mandatory training classes, meaning at least one person from each den must attend in order for the den to be eligible to participate in overnight outdoor campouts.

OWL (Outdoor Webelos Leader Training). In order for our den to be eligible for outdoor campouts this summer, we must have one or two parent members from our den attend this training. This course is offered May 8-9 at Camp Butler. It is an overnight course, opening ceremony at 6pm on Friday evening; closing ceremony at 5pm on Saturday evening.

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation), May 9, 2009 (I believe this is offered in cooperation with the OWL training as noted above). This is for the Cub Scout parent who wants to participate in overnight outdoor experiences with the den. There will be many resources and ideas shared! This class is for anyone who wants to acquire the skills and confidence necessary to plan and carry out a successful Cub Scout-level overnight activity; and increase their knowledge of the resources available from the BSA.

Spring Cub Leader Training: Our group has been highly trained - we have four trained leaders, with the exception of “WEBELOS Position Specific Leader Training.”

WEBELOS is a much different program than what we have been completing thus far. It is more detailed and more intense, and will require significant parental participation. We need several trained WEBELO leaders in our group.

Position Specific Training is offered at the following locations and dates:

Pinewood Derby, Wednesday, March 18th at Grace Drake
Registration and weigh-in starts at 5:00 pm. Racing will start shortly after 6:00 pm, concluding some time around 8:30 pm depending on the size of each den. Snacks and a movie will be provided.

Candy Sales
All monies from the Candy Sale are due on March 18th. Please see Regina Hagar during the Pinewood Derby race.

Upcoming Den Event: MAPS Air Museum, Saturday, March 21st, 12 noon
MAPS Air museum is an organization dedicated to the education, history, science and technology of flight. The cost is $6.50 per adult and $4 per Scout. This guided tour will last about 1.5 hours. It will include aircraft memorabilia and exhibits; viewing different types of aircraft in the hangar, including planes, a helicopter, and the Goodyear blimp gondola. Some of the planes will be open for the Scouts to view the insides and sit in the cockpit.

Attending Scouts will receive several Elective credits in category #6: Aircraft. Plus, they’ll have a lot of fun!! Visit
http://www.mapsairmuseum.org for more information. We will need a headcount for this event, so let us know if you are planning to attend.

Garfield Talent Show SURVEY: Is Anyone Interested …
… in performing as a group at Garfield’s annual talent show? (the Scouts, not adults!) A few of the Scouts/parents thought it would be a good idea. Please let us know if you/your Scout have any interest. It would be a GREAT way to show our den spirit – either through song or a corny Cub Scout skit.

Thoughts and ideas are appreciated. If we have enough interest, we’ll need a creative volunteer to help put the show together. Please respond back!

Scout Nights at Canal Park, Saturday, (*)June 27, 2009
Plan to join the den for a campout at Canal Park and enjoy an Akron Aeros game!! Cost is just $20 per camper. Space is limited, so we need to make our reservations NOW. Activities include a home run hitting contest, inflatable slide and a movie. Of course, you’ll enjoy watching the Akron Aeros vs. Binghamton Mets game too. Participants will also receive tickets to the July 25 AND August 29 Scout Nights at Canal Park. Let us know if you’re interested, as we’ll register as a group.

(*) NOTE: June 27 conflicts with the dates for Summer Day Camp. However, the boys are eligible to attend overnight Webelos Camp this year! Dates for Webelos Camp are August 5-8 (more details to follow).

Achievements, Beltloops, Pins, Electives
Now that we have completed all of our achievements for Bear Rank, please focus and keep track of your Scout’s accomplishments toward their beltoops, pins and electives. All will be awarded to each Bear at April’s Pack meeting. Remember, for every 10 electives completed – 1 arrow point is earned.
